Jared Smith: Asterisk ConsultantJared Smith, co-Author of Asterisk: The Future of Telephony RespectedJared has extensive experience with design, installation, custom programming, and troubleshooting Asterisk telephone systems. He is an active and respected member of the Asterisk community, co-founding the open source Asterisk Documentation Project. He is also active in Asterisk development and invented a feature in Asterisk known as IAX2 Trunking, which allows multiple simultaneous calls on the same link. Jared has been a presenter at Asterisk conventions regarding documentation of Asterisk. The announcement of the open-source release of the text of his book received three standing ovations at Astricon 2005. Jared has been a volunteer administrator of the dCap (Digium Certified Asterisk Professional) certification test, and has acted as moderator for lecture tracks at Astricon. AuthorJared recently co-authored a book Asterisk: The Future of Telephony published by O'Reilly Media in September 2005. Today [November 2005] the book is already in its third printing. Jared was the technical expert for Asterisk the Future of Telephony and is responsible for the universally acclaimed Dialplan chapter. O'Reilly has published Chapter 5: Dialplan Basics as the book's featured chapter on their website. Jared has also assisted other authors as technical editor on their O'Reilly published books. InnovatorJared's in-depth knowledge of Asterisk systems allows him to help his clients come up with innovative solutions to their phone system needs. For one client, Jared programmed a "follow-me" phone tree that allowed unanswered calls to be directed to a cell phone during office hours, helping the company avoid losing business when salespeople were away from their desks. Jared helped another employer qualify for and negotiate extremely discounted long distance rate blocks by directing call center voice transmissions from five remote call centers to one central location. That installation saved the survey company $20,000/month in long distance fees, and completely paid for itself in less than five months.
